Insurance Tips for Homeowners
Florida Statute 627.0629(1) requires insurance companies to offer Florida homeowners “discounts, credits, or other rate differentials…” for construction techniques that reduce damage and loss in windstorms.
According to FloridaDisaster.org, building features that reduce wind damage include improved roof shingles, strong roof decks, hurricane clips/straps, impact resistant glazing or shutter protection for windows, roof shape, and other construction techniques.
Most existing houses have one or more wind resistive construction features and may qualify for some insurance discounts. In addition, houses built after 1994 in Miami-Dade or Broward Counties and houses built after 2002 in the rest of the state have many wind resistive construction features and will likely qualify for credits.
FloridaDisaster.org emphasizes the importance of your roof. Your roof and your attic ventilation system can make your house vulnerable to damage in a hurricane, but there are things that can be done to reduce these risks. Next to the roof, the greatest risk for most houses is the failure of a window or door.
Leaks can also be a problem. As the Florida Division of Emergency Management points out on the website, “Once you get to the point where you don’t have water pouring into your house from missing roof sheathing or a failed window or door, leaks can occur through your attic ventilation system, around windows and doors, and lots of other places that you might not have thought of, resulting in lots of damage and possibly mold.”
As wind speeds climb above Saffer-Simpson Category 1 level, the importance of having all parts of your house securely connected and working as a system to resist the wind forces becomes more and more important.
